United Planetary Coalition

The United Planetary Coalition (UPC) is the supranational organization that spans dozens of planets within a twenty light-year radius of their headquarters. It is dedicated to maintaining peace, advancing human prosperity, and pioneering scientific discovery.

The planets that make up the UPC were colonized in centuries past, some more recently than others. You can find people living in towering metropolises, sprawling farmland, sparse colonies, and even self-sustaining space stations. Even with FTL technology, trips between systems can take months or years, so many people live their entire lives in one system.

While the UPC has legislative and military power, the various member nations across the systems retain their right to independent governance. Most nations within the UPC have their own military, scientific, and exploratory forces. It is common to see officers wearing uniforms from several different nations working together in the same UPC facility.

The UPC holds a strong stance against the use of Artificial Intelligence due to security concerns, but even with technology that makes jobs such as chef, doctor, or even scientist obsolete, the people of the UPC spend their days and find purpose in traditional professions.

The Frontier Fleet is The UPC’s most prestigious task force. It maintains advanced starships and recruits multinational experts in every field. Officers in the Frontier Force explore the furthest reaches of UPC territory, gather scientific data, and respond to emergencies that nobody else can answer.

The UPC covers dozens of worlds, each with different countries, cultures, and access to infrastructure. The planets which are closest to the “core” of the UPC territory are the oldest and most well developed, while those towards the exterior “rim” tend to be little more than small, independent outposts.

Core Worlders:

At their best, the Core Worlds are a post-scarcity utopia with countless opportunities to live the life you desire.

Even the environments in which the Core Worlders live were carefully planned and crafted by terraformers in centuries past. People inhabit every biome imaginable where restrained development strikes a near perfect balance between man and nature.

But even utopia isn't free from conflict. Bureaucratic slog, political jockeying, greed, ego, and plain misanthropy still bubble beneath the surface. While overt violence is quickly quashed, a healthy underworld picks at the edges of society.

The Core Worlds promise opportunities of every kind for those bold enough to make their place.

Character Quick Start Questions

This provides you with a jumping off point to begin designing your character and fleshing out their background, interests, and motivations.

  • What Core World planet did you live on?

    • Galleus, the home of the headquarters of UPC. Led by a one-world government, it is a symbol of governmental leadership, political ethics, and overwhelming bureaucracy. Most people from this planet value morality and stability, and their holidays and daily practices are usually cordial and orderly affairs.

    • Krasivvy, a politically complex planet with many splintered cultures and clashing countries. Known for its harsh climates, spycraft, and causing conflict in UPC proceedings. Large portions of the population have a strong connection to mysticism and folklore, often naming their ships after mythical beasts or heroes.

    • Oceania, originally colonized for the purposes of being a resort planet, has risen as a major player in the UPC. Small, independent island nations are scattered over the surface. Many traditional practices focus on ancient maritime symbols such as rope knots and sailing ships.

    • Odessa, a quiet and less populated world with a focus on agriculture and industry. Large swaths of land are controlled by worker collectives and corporations, making UPC representation fraught. Work ethic, family, and community are central to the culture and politics of most.

    • Create your own! The UPC has dozens of planets and many more countries on each. Work with your friends or on your own to make up one that suits you.
