United Planetary Coalition

The United Planetary Coalition (UPC) is the supranational organization that spans dozens of planets within a twenty light-year radius of their headquarters. It is dedicated to maintaining peace, advancing human prosperity, and pioneering scientific discovery.

The planets that make up the UPC were colonized in centuries past, some more recently than others. You can find people living in towering metropolises, sprawling farmland, sparse colonies, and even self-sustaining space stations. Even with FTL technology, trips between systems can take months or years, so many people spend their entire lives in one system.

While the UPC has legislative and military power, the various member nations across the systems retain their right to independent governance. Most nations within the UPC have their own military, scientific, and exploratory forces. It is common to see officers wearing uniforms from several different nations working together in the same UPC facility.

The UPC holds a strong stance against the use of Artificial Intelligence due to security concerns, but even with technology that makes jobs such as chef, doctor, or even scientist obsolete, the people of the UPC spend their days and find purpose in traditional professions.

The Frontier Fleet is the UPC’s most prestigious task force. It maintains advanced starships and recruits multinational experts in every field. Officers in the Frontier Fleet explore the furthest reaches of UPC territory, gather scientific data, and respond to emergencies that nobody else can answer.

The UPC covers dozens of worlds, each with different countries, cultures, and access to infrastructure. The planets which are closest to the “core” of the UPC territory are the oldest and most well developed, while those towards the exterior “rim” tend to be little more than small, independent outposts.

Rim Wordlers

While Rim Worlds only account for a sixth of the UPC’s population, it represents over half the territory and all of its deep space operations. For some, the closest planet with an atmosphere is a three-year journey away.

Composed of isolated outposts, malfunctioning space stations, stunted colonies, and half-terraformed planets, the Rim is an adventure waiting for those skilled enough to endure it. The work is hard, dangerous, and incredibly fulfilling.  While those from the Core built their world around them with intellect and applied science, inhabitants of the Rim get their hands dirty with unmatched zeal.

Due to the extreme time and expense of traveling to the Rim, personnel and supplies are always running short. This creates opportunity for scalpers, pirates, and gangs to flourish in spite (or, occasionally, with support) of Frontier Fleet peacekeeper ships.

The Rim Worlds offer a chance at real growth, both for humanity as a whole, and for the people that dare to live on the edge.

Character Quick Start Questions

  • What Rim World colony, station, or ship were you stationed on?

    • TN42, a large and fully outfitted space station, is the first stop that most outbound ships make when reaching The Rim. With a population rivaling a moderately sized city, the fast pace and ever-changing problems offer even the most experienced Frontier Fleet officers an engaging operational challenge.

    • Agrippa, one of the few planets with a “temperate” biosphere, is one of the oldest terraformed planets on the Rim. Rustic pioneer colonies have sprouted up all over the planet over the years, home to anyone looking for adventure or a second chance away from the urban politics of the Core.

    • Research Institute Ivery, one of the most prestigious scientific facilities in the entire UPC, is located on a recently terraformed planet. There is no place better to explore the very edges of scientific possibility, and working there is likely the pinnacle of your career- no matter what you do for a living.

    • Comm Relay 3, planted on the northern pole of an arctic planet, this under-ice facility services all of the nearby communication relay towers between the Core and Rim. Only the most steadfast can live under the conditions for the long-term, and most come back with strange stories of what they’ve seen in the snow.

    • Create your own! There are many more colonies, ships, and stations in the Rim, all hosting their own unique challenges. Work with your friends or on your own to make up one that suits you.

  • What role did you play on your colony, station, or ship?

  • How did you come to live in the Rim? Were you born there, chose the frontier life, or are you running from something?

  • Which Division will you support?

  • How were you about to die before arriving on Station Zero?
