The entire habitable portion of Doshi is covered in an endless sprawl of city. When the various population centers ran out of space to build out, they opted to build up. Colossal, tiered Mega Cities stand against the skyline like man-made mountains, the tallest spires high enough to pierce the clouds.
A noxious fog known as “miasma” drifts in the lower atmosphere, occasionally dropping to ground level. In order to survive, the Doshii’s body has developed a robust system to break down toxins. This new process of breaking down the toxins triggers a reaction in Doshii skin, and bright colored mottling blooms on the body’s surface where byproducts are processed.
Even with this natural resistance, prolonged exposure to miasma can cause long-term health defects. Gas masks are often worn outdoors, and have become part of daily wear fashion.
It has only been a few generations since the charade of government was abandoned, and Corporate rule began not only in fact, but name. Public services, law, and war are no more than fiscal policies determined by a bottom line. The average person is so desperate to escape crushing debt, wage slavery and exploitation that they gladly trample their neighbors for the barest glimmer of opportunity.
Despite all of this, some still believe in and fight for a better world, often at the cost of their own comfort - or, in some instances, their lives.
“Shatter Punks” was originally a clumsy insult thrown by an executive at a particular group of activists; it was swiftly adopted as a catch-all term for political scapegoats. Hackers, activists, artists, drug dealers, soup kitchens, thugs, terrorists, and fashion designers all now fall under the ever-broadening moniker. Though it began as a mockery for those living at the margins,, it became a banner for anyone that opposes the Corporate Powers to gather under.
Shatter Punk culture has established itself everywhere, with sects and subcultures spread all across the globe. No matter the differences in style between the scenes, Shatter Punks find common ground in a number of ways: bright colors, eccentric fashion, loud music and an intense disdain for Corporate life.
As propagandists attempt to suppress Shatter Punk ideology, leadership cracks down on anyone they see as a threat. Kill squads raid server rooms, execute musicians at their shows, and make bloody examples of anyone that gains too much notoriety. While this may scare away some, it radicalizes many more to the cause.
Shatter Punks live on a poisoned planet under toxic leadership. And just like their bodies, you can always see bright colors where the system is fighting back the hardest.
